It moved America into becoming one of the most successful economies of the world.

It did much to help the unity of America after, and despite, the Civil War.

It did much to fuel, if not create, the image of America as "the land of opportunity" and as a place where anyone can succeed no matter how poor their background.

It provided the resource base from which America was able to mobilize millions of troops to join, and win, the 1st World War.
