A mole of water weighs 18 g. 18 g of water in liquid form takes up 18 mL. A mole of gas takes up 22.4 L. This means that to change from liquid to solid, the volume of water increases 1244 times!

It bears mention that this is essentially how explosives work - a small volume of solid or liquid is forced to chemically turn into a gas very quickly. BOOM!

the gaseous state is always a higher volume as the particles are further apart. Pressure and temperature is what makes it return to a liquid state.
