The only reason I could see that you would 'downgrade' your processor to a Pentium III is because of the amount of second level cache RAM. If you check the following site, you'll see that the Dell Dimension 2300 motherboard will take a Pentium 4 that runs at 1.80 GHz or a Celeron that runs at 1.70 GHz

Sure - all you need is a new mobo. Because the OS will need new drivers, you may have to use a roomier HD. The P3 chip may require a more robust PS. How much RAM will the new mobo have? 256M? Buy another 256.

1.8 GHz celeron is a socket 478, Pentium III is a socket 370. It won't fit.

Yes, just buy a pentium III sticker and put it over your Celeron sticker

You actually need to contact a speciallist and get new hardware installed. I suggest go on Dell.com and contect them through phone. Make some research on the price too.

That would be a downgrade. You should look at a 1.8 or higher p4 for your cpu.
