There were great changes from the early, Grecian fashions through the crinolines to the bustles of the late 19th century. Men's fashion did not change so much, except in the cut of coats and trousers, and the wearing of ties and collars. In Europe, city-dwellers would have kept up with the styles of the day, with the country people keeping to their more traditional costumes. These costumes, with their individual styles by country, and their working in embroidery and adaptations by hand, are still national costumes for many countries.
