I've heard that it takes a lot of fuel to start a bike/car...

It does NOT take more fuel to start your bike than to let it idle. Why do people say it does? That is such a lie. Possibly this might be true if under 5 seconds of wait time. Anything longer, and you are burning more fuel at idle.

Starting a bike takes a tiny squirt of fuel. Letting it idle lets a constant flow of fuel burn up.

If you have a long light, shut 'er down. It keeps heat off your legs too.

It never makes sense to turn off your motorcycle at a stoplight. Idling doesn't use so much fuel that it will make a significant difference. If you want to save gas, accelerating slowly will do much more than turning it off for a minute would. Plus, it's dangerous - you need to be able to get your bike moving quickly if need be. You really shouldn't even be taking the bike out of gear at a stoplight - it should be in first gear with the clutch in so your ready to move.

When stopped at a red light the engine should be running and you should be in 1st gear - Always. You never know when some moron is not going to stop and you need to get your scoot out of the way fast. When I'm stopped for a while and there is a car behind me stopped, I'll slip into neutral to give my left hand a rest.

Anyone that took the Safety Course: "always leave the bike in 1st gear at a light or stop" . In case you have to get out of the way quickly.

You would have to know you would be sitting there for several minutes. If it were a particularly long light, and I had just missed it, and I were worried about gasoline consumption on my motorcycle, I might turn it off. But I think the savings in gas doesn't compared to the extra wear and tear on the starter.

It would be better to leave the bike running..it's too hard on the bike's components on a constant on and off..it doesn't take that much gas to just leave it running.....

Its not fuel efficient and creates wear on your starter motor.

i highly doubt it becuase it takes more energy/fuel to start up your bike again when the light turns green.
