It depends on the time of day. In the morning rush hour especially it seems to take ages. Long stops at station, even stops between stations. But when that's over, the Metro is the only way to go in Madrid.

The system has some age to it and was built when life did not have to go by so fast. I never had any problem with its speed. Beats walking and the auto traffic hands down. Hey, your in Spain, slow down, enjoy life. Vivo yo!!

At least once you get used to it you know exactly where you stand. Anyway I never found it really slow-it's way better than either the Tube or the Subway in NY whichg are erratic at best
