Portsmouth is a pretty large Naval base town, it is about 2 [ish] hours from London.

It is right on the sea and it parts very nice, as for being a Metro area well I think it would be classed as a city and has all the trapping of a big city.

Is there any reason you picked Portsmouth as a place to ask about? or was it just a name you read about. Not having a dig at you, was interested as to why you actually asked about this place NOT many people outside of England would know about it

It's about 60 miles south of Bristol and 120 miles west of London.

it is on the south coast and is a city in its own right. south west of london and near southampton
