German and English languages are actually the most closely related- like French and Spanish?
I guess England and German states both saw France as a miltiary threat at various points in history and would have allied together against the French?
"Germanic" tribes "invaded"/ settled in the British isles; not to mention many similar cultural/historical aspects of people living both in Germania and Britannia throughout points in history?
I'm guessing the reason you are probably looking for is that British royalty and royalty of German states inter-married often and the countries developed close political ties as a result; I believe it wasn't unheard of for the English king to also be king of a German state too- you'll have to study/read more for a more thorough explanation of when and why this happened.
