1. What is the purpose of having a light source on a microscope?

2. If the magnifying power of an eyepiece is 10x and that of an objective is 45x, by how much is the specimen seen through through this combination of lenses magnified?

3. What is the fundamental differecne between a compound microscope and the simple microscope that van Leeuwenhoek used in the 1600s to describe living cells?

1. The stage would be too dark without a light source for enough light to be collected by the microscope for viewing.
2. 450x
3. A compound microscope has (at least) an ocular and an objective lens, connected by a tube. van Leeuwenhoek's instrument had only one lens.
