Elton John's "my father's gun" song & meaning...?

i heard this song recently on movie Elizabethtown; it's one my fave songs. does anyone know the meaning behind the song and why EJ wrote it? Also the reason behind other EJ songs like - "mona lisas and mad hatters?" Thanks!

Elton John didn't write the lyrics, only the music. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics.

I take it to mean his father died fighting in The Civil War and he has gone to take his place in the fight.

Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters is also written by Bernie Taupin.

Songs can mean different things to different people. It is up to you to decide how it makes you feel when you hear it.
