Some organizations run a 250 production class (250 ninja, vtr250 etc) pretty cheap doing that.

If you are looking at riding something more than 125cc I would suggest you try a 400. They can be nabbed for around £500-600 depending on the year and model. Even a standard bike can be riden to the top 5 at club level. My brother runs a ZXR400 in the Darley championship and managed a 5th in his first meeting. I'm on a CBR600RR or an R6 depending on my mood and think racing is the best thing that happened to me. Initial start up costs are not too high, but the entry fees can be a killer. Try the Mick Boddice Race School @ Darley Moor to see if you fancy it. You get to ride a race prepped 05 CBR600RR for the day, round a safe, fast, fun track.

Track Days are the best and safest way to dip your toes into the racing world. You can start bike racing on a 50cc moped, but if you want a bit more speed I suggest starting out on a 125cc.

This link gives great info for finding out where track days are, how much they cost, type of event and where they are based. It also has a link to hiring a bike (between £125 and £500) plus deposit to cover damage.

There is a one-make race series for MZ 250 singles which is cheap and very competitive. They are no slouches, either. You can get a reasonable bike set up for under £1000.
