Given the choice would you rather have a democratically elected government exactly as we have at the moment, or would rather have a idol of some kind as the single governing entity. I.e. for those of a religious persuasion, image the earthly vessel of the religious being your ‘dictator’. I.e. Jesus or Mohammad etc? For those without the religious perspective, someone like John Lennon, Stephen Hawking or whoever you look up to or aspire to be.

With a democracy you have 100’s and 1000’s of points of failure; with a dictatorship you only have one. Is one good person in control better than what we currently have?

Please spend more than a few seconds on this, its much more involved than a 2 second response. We associated bad things to the term dictator because thats what we've been taught, understand that a dictator could very well do the right thing too.

Excellent question and one that can't possibly be answered by me. Considering that democracy, as we know it,isn't even a blip on the screen of history yet, how can it possibly be compared to dictatorships that survived for many centuries? It would be easy for me to say democracy at this point in time, but everything is relative, while you and I enjoy the benefits of democracy, our armed forces do not. Each unit operates as a dictatorship out of necessity. Each member gives up his rights when he enlists. Therefore we as a democracy can't survive without a dictatorship in one form or another. Many of our citizens forget that fact, and sit around on their fat behinds criticizing their government and complaining about their freedom of speech or right to privacy but can't get off their lazy butts to vote. Do they really deserve to live in a democracy and if not, how long will a democracy last? It's way too early to think of democracy as a form of government.

It does not have to be either one of! It could be a design of what works best for the majority which would involve rule & control by the legal Majority. Not a bunch of phonies with slick lips! A true democracy of the people by the people eliminate or substancially reduce the role representative government is currently utilizing enforce public service laws & rules plus subject them to being remove from office immediately via the public they serve.Oh yeah we need a political/voting/polling system that is Iron clad proof positive nationally uniformed with a paper trial & public posting of original ballots!

I would prefer a dictator with some strings attached.
I have lost faith in democracy. A bunch of stupid guys running government, nothing to do with society welfare and busy in filling their pockets. I also dont like a left loose dictator where nobody can raise voice against his wrong actions.
I suggest a hierarchal dictatorship. Each state choose a governor which in turn choose a President with consensus. All governors are appraised and reviewed by President and President's work is appraised and reviewed by governors.
Presidents and Governors are free to choose their team members (that constitutes their Government) and the team need to be approved by a committee formed by governors. Each person should satisfy a set of minimum qualification rules like Education, no criminal background, no office of profit etc.
Hope my dream comes true some day !!

Despite all the problems we have in the United States we STILL have the highest standard of living in the world. I've traveled throught the world and I'll take democracy over a dictatorship any day of the week.

Wow, Dictatorships have never succeeded. They usually rule their people by fear and intimidation and the only people that succeed are the ones who have power. At least with our Democracy we can vote idiots out of office and vote them into office. I don't have to worry about a dictator driving by and deciding my wife would better suit his goals of domination so i no longer have her. And if I disagree then I will just disappear! You should live under a dictatorship and then ask your question!
