Well, I was in the middle of reading an article about horses, and they stated that a horse would eat a piece of steak if you threw it in their pen (Obviously if they were very hungry). I do believe there is some truth to it, as the first evidence of horses shown they might of been carnivores. Do I have my facts straight, or am I false? What do you think? Just wanted to know.

Horses who have the taste buds to eat meat, will. Just not as main food source.

My mare is extremly a junk food horse. If I have any take out food, meat, no meat whatever, candy, donutes, cookies, she will want a bite if I eat infront of her. I extremly limit the amount I give her. My other two horses just sniffs the "human consuming foods" and snorts. As my mare will sniff it and gobble it up before I can blink my eye.

However the whole article can be false, yet true. It depends on what the auther was trying to prove whether as a main meal or as a small munching thing. I define main meal as something they will continue to eat day after day with no other natural food source. Horses bodies are not designed to break down meat or such harsh foods. Reason why have to be very careful in what we give them that naturally they would not eat in the wild. They have very sensitive stomach tracts and can easily colic.

I do not think that it is true. I have never heard anything of the sort. I would think that if horses were carnivores that farmers would have a real problem with turning horses and cows out together.

If anybody makes their horse hungry enough to eat steak then they should be imprisoned.

I googled it and cannot find any articles about a horse eating meat.

I've had horses eat cigarettes, ice, drink sodas, eat sandwiches, you name it. A curious horse will try anything, and a steak would taste salty. It depends on the horse. Some are finisky and others are like a child - curious about everything. Steak would not be good for horses, as they are not built to digest meat, but I guess neither are cigarettes.

i do not think they would eat the meat. I have a horse/study them, and they are true herbvores ( sorry, cant spell that) and when they smell meat, they think that there is a carnivore around them. My horse acts very different if i have a McDonalds cheeseburger on me, and he wount come near me at all. This could just be my horse, but i dont think that they would eat it. Hope this helps

There is a highland pony in Scotland that will actually eat the fish heads that fishermen leave behind on the beach. I think it may be customary to the breed, but other than this particular breed (which as far as I have learned in studying them myself) is the only horse known or proven to eat any kind of meat. Personally I think a horse would starve itself before eating meat, unless you own a highland pony.

Well, I'v enever heard of it either. Though, I did get sent this interesting FWD from a friend about Patches the horse. This horse, well, more like a large pony, went around in a car with his owner. He remodeled his car so this horse could sit in it. No Joke!! Get this though, they went to McDonald's and they got a cheeseburger, and the horse ate it. I swear! I saw it for myself.
Though, I'm thinking....no, that can't be good for a horse.

I had a Tennessee Walking Horse, Wilson's Native Son, that loved hamburgers-but only if they had onions & no pickles on them. He also liked bread soaked in milk, dry cat food that had milk poured over it and rose petals. He also liked to have his teeth brushed & he sure needed it after the hamburger with onions. He also enjoyed coke and of course, beer. Most horses love beer. But no matter how much an animal likes "human food" you should limit how much of it they get & some "human food" should never be given to any animal..

I'm not sure about this one. I don't think most horses would.
Altough a long time ago I heard that arabian horses did get fed upon meat and milk/wine.
please note: do NOT attempt to feed thses things to any horse it may make them very ill.

Depends on the horse. I knew a pony that loved pepperoni pizza, cheeseburgers and hot dogs. She'd dive face first into a birthday cake as well and drink soda out of can, cup or two liter. She was amazing! The amazing omnivore pony! lol

It's true My horses eat dog food if given the opportunity.

They know how to get the lid off the dry dog food barrel and do if I forget to close the door.
