Yes, you can. My husband is from England and he put off getting an American license for a while. He was pulled over one day for passing a stopped school bus on the opposite side of the road. He presented his British license and was given a warning (including to stay in the car, because he got out).

When I travel to Britain, I just produce my Florida license. You can get an International Driver's license if it makes you feel better. Check with AA (AAA here issues them)

You will need to be 25 to rent a car though.

Yes as long as you go through a car hire company and are over 24 years (could be 25).
Need to take paper and Card as proof of licence when you travel. For some really helpful driving hints, see www.virginholidays.co.uk and go to questions and answers on driving as they have some very strict driving rules like turning right on a red light is allowed, you cannot overtake school buses etc.

Have a great holiday!

You should be able to drive anywhere in the US with a UK (preferably photo) driving licence so long as you are over 25 years old (some car rentals may accept younger drivers if they over 21).

for up to 6 months, but it's so easy to go to the AA or RAC and get an International on the spot, and that's good for a year anywhere in the world, basically, and costs probably around 5 quid. saves hassles in a lot of third world countries, like the usa

I suspect it would be O.K. - but you might want to call the DMV first (department of Motor Vehicles).

Since you're from GB, I feel the need to remind you that you need to drive on the RIGHT side of the road.... The RIGHT side is the CORRECT side... um...
