The Numerator is the number on "top" of the fraction, the Denomintaor is the the number on the bottom.
Think of the denominator as the number you are dividing into the numerator. 1/2 = 1 divided by 2 or .5
Another way to look at it - If you have a pie, the denominator is how many equal slices you cut, the numerator is the number of pieces you serve - if you cut a pie six ways and serve five pieces then you have served 5/6 of the pie
