My daughter will be 13 next month and needs to shave her legs and under her arms but now she is telling me that kids tease her because she does not shave her arms. I never shaved my arms when I was younger nor did any of my friends except the few who swam competitively. Is this something that girls are doing now? I don't want my daughter shaving her arms so she is going to have to learn to combat the teasing - any suggestions.

I am talking about her arms - between her wrist and her elbow. She does shave under her arms.

My 10 yo daughter is self-conscious about the hair on her forearms as well. I would recommend veet for a younger girl like yours. Shaving is fine for under arms or legs but I think a depilatory would be better for a 12 year old.

I have a 13 yo that is so self-conscious that she is covered from neck to ankle. Girls this age can be so delicate.

Dealing with teasing is so hard. We are really working on this issue as well. If her arm hair is black or dark brown, let her get rid of it.

Good Luck.

I am heary and have never shaved my arms. Some people are doing the waxing but I think she is too young for that. I never had any teasing about my arms being heary, in fact some guys as I grew older found it sexy instead.... Just tell her to be a leader and not a follower. Tell her that shaving her arms can cause her to have bumps, to be itchy all the time and when the hair comes back out is not sexy at all to have to arms touched (well she might be too young for that) but being femenine has nothing to do with having a little extra hair on your arms.

Kids do all kinds of things that their parents would not have done when they were the same age.
Shaving her arms is probably a (harmless) regional Fad at the moment. I know a number of children the same age who do not do this. but they have other strange but benign practices.
I don't think stopping her will accomplish much if you don't give her a rational explanation of why you don't want her to do this.
such as explaining that when the hair grows back it will be thicker. (i'm sure you can come up with other reasons)
perhaps she or they think her arms are unduly hairy.
If they are not you should let her know that it doesn't matter what the other kids think. in a few years she will have other friends that try to get her to do things that will seem ridiculous.
If she does have excessive hair growth, perhaps you should look into having it removed by a plastic surgeon. they use a laser to kill the hair root. There are drawbacks to this such as overexposure to the laser burning the skin and such, please be careful. as permanent damage can occur. and good luck dealing with your new teen.
PS. I noticed that one person answered that you should be a friend to your child, WRONG. you are the Mother, you want what is best for your child, even if it ticks them off.

I don't shave my arms because the hair is blond and doesn't grow in thick. I'm only 20 but I knew girls in highschool who insisted it was the sexiest thing ever. I think it's creepy and kids will tease eachother about anything. I would let her do it, but tell her to not worry about the other kids.

I'm an Esthetician and most of my younger clients are girls between the age of 12 and 17 who want their arms waxed. It has been a really big trend over the past 5 years.

I am currently thirteen and DO NOT shave the part from my wrist to my elbow. It makes the hair darker, so if you do it once you have to have dark arm hair all your life. (personal experience). Shaving legs and underarms is normal though.

hang in there mom. It's a passing fad (I hope). In my day arm shaveing was because of dark arm hair (+ swimming). So give your daughter all the love u can. One thing my dad told me at that age was " go with the crowd but be yourself". She needs to hang on to her own originality so back her up in that department. HUGS

In school, kids are sitting at desks. Their arms on the desk, always displayed. Of course, girls will notice a difference amongst themselves. Hairy arms is the focus now. Help your daughter, spare her from ridicule, put some depilatory creme like Neet, etc. I use this product : www.hairnomore.com.
Kids are cruel. Help her. Nice jewellry also distacts!

Yes when the time comes and the hair is to long you got to shave under your arms. You have to because it just looks wrong if you don't.

Not many people I know do this. (I'm a teen) Maybe she has really dark arm hair? Other than that.. I think it's weird when people shave it off.
