French Revolution had many causes:

it was the century of Enlightment, free thinking, masonry,... and discussions about the different forms of power (constitutions, parliaments, parlementary monarchies...) were possible and many people began to think it was possible to have a king and a parliament (representing the people) working together. Also, religion was discussed and people began to try to disconnect it from the royal authority.

we were less than 20 years after American independance (the emancipation was in all minds)

there was a lack of food (very cold winters before 1789, bad harvests, no food, people hungry), instable ministers, bad financial results for the State...

people were tired of the old distribution of power and privileges, everything was given to the church and the aristocracy, nothing to the "Tiers Etat" representing the other people. And you had to think that bourgeoisie (middle class) was growing fast with traders, banks, ... and represented much more money than before. They felt they were underrepresentated.
The three orders in place politically were not representative of the society then. It had to change.

An unofficial thesis (but I think it true): King's brothers and cousins who despised this "weak King" and his austrian wife wanted to get some power (in a constitutional monarchy, e.g.) and they encouraged with a lot of money rebellions and riots through the whole Country.
