At its height Byzantine empire ruled over about 80 percent of the former Roman Empire's territory. But soon much of the lands of the former Western Roman Empire were lost. These were parts of modern countries of Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Spain and Italy. Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon and Iraq were lost to Muslims in the 7th Century. Also modern countries of Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia and almost all other Balkan countries were at once parts of the Byzantine Empire. The core of the country were modern day Greece and Turkey. Turks came in the year 1071 and took most of what is now Turkey and parts of Greece fell to Latins around the 4th crusade, ie 1204. The last remnants of the empire were conquered by the turks in the 15th century.

Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1453, NOT 1452.The Ottomans had progressively been taking over Byzantine territory since the late 14th century; when Constantinople fell, it was the last remaining piece of the Byzantine empire. The Ottomans made Constantinople the capital of their empire. So, the answer to your question is, not a country, but the Ottoman Empire

ahhhh. I think the Byzantine empire expired a long time ago, but I guess you mean current countries geographically.

Here's some help: go to Wikipedia.org or some similar site, research the byzantine empire until you get a map. Then compare that map to a current map. Note which countries cover the same area. Quite easy.

I think Sicily was part of the Byzantine Empire because Patton bragged about it when he captured Polermo from the Germans during WWII. That's all I know.
