Before you answer, you must see this piece about an Arabic translator who was discharged for being gay.

From the Daily Show. :-)

Um...the deal with the video clip is that I thought it was hilarious and wanted to share.

But the responses are really interesting.

Look, the reality is that gays always have been in the military and always will be. It's only natural to feel strongly about your country and to want to defend it.
It's just that some gays/lesbians are better hiding their sexuality than others. It's more a question of should gays be allowed to be OUT while serving in the military, not whether they should be there at all.

Now that we've cleared up what you question actually is all about, my answer is "Yes, of course."

It shouldn't matter what a person's sexuality is when cowering in a foxhole or diving under the sea to disarm weapons. It shouldn't matter what the sexuality is of the person who's saving your butt or defending your country.

First of I do not have to watch your little video to answer this. I am a former USAF Major, and I served proudly for 14 years. I have been in relationships with other gay military personnel who also have served or currently serving faithfully. We serve our nation proudly, effectively the same as any other American. We can and have died in the protection of this nation, the same as any one else.

its not a matter of belonging in the military cause who really belongs any where? I serve in the army and there are gays here just as in the navy, marine corps. The military is just our job NOT our lifestyle....

I don't wanna see that but I will say if you want to be in the military and you not scared to get a bullet in your a$$ then by all means go. Why should't a gay man or woman be in military?

Sure they do. They are in the military, they've always been in the military, they were just in the closet.

People used to ask if blacks should be in the military. It made some people "uncomfortable". Like the military exists to make people comfortable...

Of course gay people belong in the military… who better to be stuck in a submarine, deep under water for months on end???

Seriously though, anyone who is prepared to die for a cause, more power to them. If it means I don’t have to fight you can stick Rupaul and Lance Bass on the front-line for all I care…

Yes they do, i served in U.S. Navy but at the time they did'nt have the don't ask, don't tell policy so i had to keep my sexuality a secret. It does'nt matter if the person is straight or gay as long as they do their job.
