1 7/8 + 3/4 = 15/8 + 6/8 = 21/8 = 2 5/8.

(1 7/8 to 13/8: Multiply 8 by 1 and add 7, place over 8)
(3/4 to 6/8: Multiply numerator and denominator by 2 to match the denominator in 13/8)

Add 15/8 to 6/8 to get 21/8. Divide 21 by 8 to get 2 with a remainder of 5 (2 5/8).

Convert everything to common denominators:

1 7/8 is the same as 8/8 + 7/8
3/4 is the same as 6/8

so now it looks like:

8/8 + 7/8 + 6/8

If all denominators are the same, just add the numerators:

(8+7+6)/8 or 21/8

21/8 reduces down to 2 5/8

You need a common denominator, which in this case is 8. The fraction then becomes 17/8+6/8, which equals 23/8, which equals 2 7/8.
