Critical that your password is typed correct. No upper case or errors. Microsoft Hotmail will only ask you to type it again.

An if this happens to many times they block your email account an ask you to ID, yourself with the secret information you gave them in case you loose your password and want it back.

Take care to type slow with your password.

It depends when you opened your account. If long time ago and it stayed inactive Hotmail do it to you. Make sure to use this account very often the first month. After the first month you will not be asked for password.

I had exactly the same experience with it, which ended up closing my account. In addition to entering password I had to repeat some stupid numbers from the screen just to prove my identity.
