I don't know if this is the same smell, but I refinished a new wood dresser and it had a strong scent. I sprinkled baking soda in each drawer and left them empty and open and opened the windows in the bedroom so it got lots of fresh air. I left it in a few days and vaccuumed it out. THEN I used a sachet in the drawers. It faded completly in about a month.

Wood furniture won't have a cardboard smell. The materials that smell are usually the glues in particle board and other substrates. Are your drawers actually wood or some wood-look material, like melamine? It could even be that your furniture has a lot of wood veneer -- a very thin wood applied to another material such as particle board, and humidity from the air is emphasizing the smell.
No matter the construction of the furniture though, there is really no way to totally get rid of the smell although time does help a bit; the smell has to be masked. Empty the furniture and spray with an unscented odour-eating air freshener, then let it air out for an hour or so before you put your stuff back in. Either place a dryer sheet in each drawer or invest in some scented sachets. Dryer sheets should be replaced every month or so to do their job properly.

Wood should not smell. Sounds like you have some composite material. Place bars of soap in the drawers. Yardley's English Lavender works very well, but others can do the job too. We used soap to keep our furniture fresh while in storage. We also tucked soap bars in between the seat and the arms and back to help remove the cigarette odor from a recliner given to us by a smoker. Also keep a small "courtesy" bar of soap in each piece of luggage to keep it fresh.

You can go to wal mart and get some closet sachet's packets. They come in different odors such as gardenia, rose, ect. Place them in the drawers to get the smell out of your clothes.

Use furniture oil, but not too much. That was the way I got rid of the smell when I moved to my new appartment.

Spray your room each day with All fabric spray. Then put a dryer sheet in each drawer of all dressers.
You could also put a small bag of pot poree in each drawer. You can put pot poree in peices of panty hose then tie them .
