I microwaved some instant oatmeal this morning - apples and cinnamon - and when I got to my class I had to keep going to the restroom- diarrhea. I just got home and looked at the box, and it was dated to sell by April, 2006. Well, this is September. Just wanted to let people know not to eat oatmeal that is expired. However, I'm wondering if any of you that are into health prevention, or health care, would know what could have possibly caused diarrhea from the oats, or was it the apple in the oats? I didn't notice anything unusual about the way it looked. Any answers?

Sometimes the box oatmeal with fruit is treated with nitrates. There are other preservatives on the fruit as well. That could be it.

You can be sure it was NOT THE OATMEAL.

For safety reasons, the expiration date on food items is always shorter than the life span of the product. Dry products can actually last years before going bad if they are kept in a moist-free environment.

It could have been the milk you used or even something you had last night.

More likely, you could have touched something (anything) and gotten bacteria on your hands and transferred to your mouth without even noticing it. We seldom know what we get our hands into ... even if we are aggressive hand washers.

Keep eating your oatmeal and don't fret!!

Good luck!!

I'm sorry you were sick.

How long did you microwave it? Was it cooked well?

Maybe the apples weren't good since the expiration date was in April.

What else did you have to eat?

Ate too fast?

Something else is going on - maybe the milk. No dry product a few months past the date would cause that kind of problem.

I did a study on water that was put in a mic, and put the cooled microwaved water in plants. in about 2 weeks the plants died. I highly recommend you not eat anything put in a microwave. Radiated food is toxic.

yes, oatmeal will make you go potty...it's just a fact of life...but you're right, you HAVE to check the dates on your food...
