I agree with the people above me should be re-named to rare sense, etc!!!

Sadly, no. Perhaps in the days when the term was coined, there was less time devoted to watching TV, etc. There probably was not even such a thing as a television, or being lazy. The more time a person spends out in the real world (i.e. not watching TV and sitting around all day), the more common sense they are apt to gain.

I think common sense is actually pretty rare.
To me, lack of common sense should be the definition for "stupidity".

Nope, no-one has it. It has absolutely nothing to do with how smart you are either.

The only sentence in which they use those words is: "Use your common sense", which means the person didn't know the answer in the first place. So its something that no-one has, but we're all expected to use.

These days? Apparently not. In fact i think it ought to be re-names 'rare sense' or 'unusually sense' or maybe even just 'i can still think for myself sense'

old definition was "Sound practical judgment; the general feeling of mankind: the system of philosophy founded by Reid, based on general intuitions."

Nowadays people do not really have practical judgment they rely on the other person. So I would say not in today's world.

funnily enough, i asked myself this same question today - colleagues and customers where i work obviously dont have any - i tell them exactly what they need to do and they still get it wrong or have to ask several questions to get it done right!!!

i think a lot of people must have been in the loo when God handed that out!
