Not real clear on the relationship of homeostasis to pond water. Since the water has no self regulating mechanism...and it's not the warmth of the earth since ice always floats, even in my tea glass...perhaps you could find the answer in your textbook and get back to us? It's a real ponder.

because the density of the solid forming ice is less than the density of liquid water so what ever ice is formed goes to the top. the bottom doesnt freeze because the new ice is being created and the old ice melts because the temp. of the outside will not stay at freezing mark.

Water has a unique property in that right before it freezes the density decreases. It the colder water rises and forms ice.

Because the temp is warmer in the bottom.
