why are hills good places to rear sheep?

Sheep are decended from wild species such as mouflon, which tend to live in mountainous areas. They are hardy, and can live off quite poor grazing. Also, they do not particularly like wet boggy soil, so hilly areas can provide dryer conditions.

Farmers use lower, flat fields for crops. But where it's difficult to grow crops they use the land for livestock. Cattle aren't so good on the steep slopes, so sheep graze there instead.

In the High Atlas mountains of Morocco, where land is scarce and is therefore precious, the narrow valley floors grow crops. They even terrace the sides of the valley for more fields. The houses tend to be 1 room wide and maybe 2 or 3 rooms high, just built 1 on top of the other, to save space.
