Gas is the more efficient way of heating a home. If your portable heater is electric, then you are paying the electric company for the gas that they used to produce your electricity, plus their profit, plus the inefficiency in the production of that electricity.

Having said that, a space heater can save you energy if you use it to heat a single room and turn the thermostat down to the rest of the house.
