I have 3 boys in 6th, 7th and 8th grade. Over the past couple years they have dressed as a football fan (sweatshirt from team and painted face) and some sort of vampire-like creatures with capes and fangs. They liked it a lot.
Their classmates tend to wear similar things or there a Suma wrestler, pirates, etc. If you are worried about fitting in a pirate is perfect. You will fit in.
If you want to be unique you can make a costume, like a Rubiks cube (cover a box with a trash bag and put colored paper on it for the squares), an MP-3 player (use a large piece of cardboard, decorate it and attach it to yourself with straps) or think of other everyday items. How about a "head on a platter"? Fit a piece of carboard around your neck (not too tight) and cover it with foil. You can make a silver hat that would be the top to the platter. Cut a hole in a tablecloth and wear it under the platter, over your shoulders. To make it round you can put a piece of round cardboard on, then the tablecloth, then the carboard platter.

there will prbably be at least two people going as pirates, so why don't you try something unique, like maybe a skateboarding zombie. Or maybe a pizza. But do try something unique
(FYI, for my 6th grade dance, i went as Napolean Dynamite)

I once dressed my son as an accident victim. Go to Goodwill and get some old clothes, then rip them up and use brown spray paint to make them look old and dirty. You can make fake blood by combining cornstarch and corn syrup with red food coloring. Use green and brown eyeshadow (makeup) to make a black eye. Mess up your hair, etc.

Lololololol halloween costume to a dance, man? Lololololol. Dances where i come from we try and look hott and gets our freaks awn :) lolol, but you should be spiderman. rofl. I dunno bud, i was a girl last halloween i went out for (2 years ago)
