The letcurer did go over it in class, but I've been very ill recently and was absent. I'm catching up with work and need to understand this in order to complete the rest of this. If I can understand this question then I can do the others. I'm in college, not school - I have a lecturer, not a teacher.

Sorry I messed it up please read again:
ok the 2 will mean squared

(y-1)2 means (y-1)(y-1)
1. F the 2 first terms y x y which= y2
2. O the outer 2 terms y x -1 which = -y
3. I the 2 inner terms -1 x y which= -y
4. L the 2 last terms -1 x -1 which = 1

So finally you have y2 + -y-y + 1
Now the 2 y terms add to = -2y
leaving you with y2-2y+1 as your final answer

I'm sure the teacher went over this in class, if it's that important for you to learn, you should pay attention to the teacher.

(y - 1)^2 = (y - 1)(y - 1) = y^2 -y -y +1 = y^2 - 2y +1.
