It is a slang term for what is officially known as an Extra Vehicular Activity. It, of course means the astronauts leave the interior of their space ship to perform activities in the weightless, airless environment of outer space.
The term, "space walk" almost exclusively is used to mean the EVA while in orbit, or flight, not while on a surface, such as the moon, even though it is technically an EVA.
