The movie you are thinking of is Imitation of Life
the older one was made in 1934. the big splashy Douglas Sirk version you are thinking was made in 1959. Susan Kohner played the girl Sarah Jane, Juanita Moore palyed her mother.
Troy Donahue played the boy who pushes her to ground when he fionds out she is black. He was concerned blacks would dislike him for the role but got fan mail from blacks saying it was to good to see the scene and that blacks should not be ashamed and try to
pass as white.
