I can't play Tomb Raider 3 on my Ps2, anybody know why?

I bought 2 games because i thought something was wrong with the first one, turns out, i can play but the game says it doesn't detect a memory card, i even bought a playstaion 1 memory card thinking that would work, and it STILL doesn't detect it, anything i can do besides buying a playstation 1?

The only thing I can think of is that either the game is faulty or your memory card is busted.
