Its a joke. A character from the book Hitchhikers guide asked what the meaning of life was and I think a computer replied 42. Now this has nothing to do with real life at all because the book is fiction and so is the computer. Anyway if any idiot thinks a computer can give the meaning of life answer, they are thicker than that stuff!

Where have you been all your life? 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' as every one else has said.

Mere seconds before the Earth is to be demolished by an alien construction crew, journeyman Arthur Dent is swept off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher penning a new edition of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Quotes: The Book - It's an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, Man had always assumed that he was the most intelligent species occupying the planet, instead of the *third* most intelligent. The second most intelligent were of course dolphins. Dolphins had long known of the impending destruction of earth and had on many occasions tried to alert mankind but their warnings were mistakenly interpreted as amusing attempts to punch footballs or whistle for titbits

According to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the best drink in the known universe is the Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster. It has the effect of having your brains smashed out with a slice of lemon... wrapped around a large gold brick.

And finally what you were waiting for - 42.

The Ultimate Answer

Some time ago a group of hyper-intelligent pan dimensional beings decided to finally answer the great question of Life, The Universe and Everything.
To this end they built an incredibly powerful computer, Deep Thought. After the great computer programme had run (a very quick seven and a half million years) the answer was announced.

The Ultimate answer to Life, the Universe and Everything is...

(You're not going to like it...)

Is...

42

In the Hitch Hikers' Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, a race of pan-dimensional beings (whos extension into our percepion is as mice) built a computer (called Deep Thought) to find the answer to "life, the universe, and everything". After many thousands of years Deep Thought replied that the answer was 42, and that the real probl;em was that onone had considered what the question really was.
The mice then built an even bigger computer which, incidentally, bore a remarkable resemblance to what we consider as OUR home planet. This is thought by some to be the reason for our persistent unease and search for the "meaning of life", othere know that every sentient being in the universe feel this and is no more than general paranoia.

Incidentally, Deep Thought, in the first few milliseconds of operation, starting from first principals as "I think therfore I am" had deduced the existence of income tax and rice pudding.

The writer of the originial radio show was often asked why he picked 42 as the Ultimate Answer...he said that to be funny the answer needed to be a smallish number with no particular significance......the joke was after millions of years of calculations the answer finally came up only for people to realise that they did not know the Ultimate Question.
By the way answerer number seven...'anonymous'....six times nine is not forty two.
