The limit on the speedometer isnt the necessary speed a car can go. My car speedometer reads up to 120 but my car starts to crap out at 106.

and to answer your question...

cars race off state roads with absolutely no speed limits at all. and not everyone drives the speed limit.

There are no speed limits on some roads in Germany. Go drive there -) Plus you feel good when your speedometer shows like 240 miles an hour limit...

There may be times during an emergency when you need that exta speed. It is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Some kids modify their cars to use as race cars. They will need that extra indication. It is not something that you should worry about. A lot of people do not pay attention to speed limits,
I can understand your question though, I used to think about that myself. Stock car racing is another area where that extra indication is necessary.
You know about high speed chases by Police, They certainly use that speedometer.

Bear in mind that the acutal engine of a car is most efficient when it's not at it's top speed, so to lower engine wear and tear they are built with higher maximum speeds than the average person will need. However, because there are POTENTIALLY higher speeds that the car can travel at, we need a speedometer to tell you by how much.

i dont think montana has speed limits, but it goes that fast for people like me who can find empty roads once n a while havent hit 140 though did do 120 ( i think ) in a maxima

i also heard if a vehicle says it can do 140 then it most likely can really do 150 - dunno if its tru but everyone always says well they clocked me at 120 but the spedometer said 110 so i assume they all go a lil faster

Does a speed limit of 65mph stop me from going 70mph? or 80mph?

Did it stop me 16 years ago from driving 127mph on I-91S between Amherst, MA and Hartford, CT and making the trip in under 30 minutes?

No.

There is no point. If you live in Europe you could drive it on the Autobahn. Or in US in Texas, you can drive for hours and never see another car.
