Sounds like a variety of skink, especially if was fairly shiny. Could be a great plains skink. Photos are available at:

Is there anyway you can post a picture of the lizard becasue there is a lot of lizards with those markings. What kind of eyes does it have? Does the lizard have claws or what kind of feet? If you could get a picture I could tell you more about the animal. Thanks--Ashley
