I can't road run because I have buggered my knees up from years of dancing, so I'm one of those wusses you see pounding it out on a treadmill at the gym. I scare people away from me because apparently I smile for NO obvious reason (that those watching can tell, heeheeheee!) while running, and it seems that nobody should enjoy running THAT MUCH!

I think maybe the way you're smiling at them could be the problem. Is it a gummy all out smile, like you've just drank 12 cups of coffee and are working off the energy? They might thnik you're not a true jogger, but someone with a caffeine addiction and poor sense of direction.
Make sure to jog at a medium pace, wearing only trendy jogging suits, and carrying a look of resolve and direction. This and only this will be the way to prove to all those joggers that you're serious about your leisurely craft.

When I jog I am concentrating on not passing out so usually I am in pain! :) Jogging is difficult for some people so maybe they are just focusing on what they're doing. And what's wrong with walkers? They're out there doing something at least!

I do smile when people make eye contact with me, that's about it. I think that people don't smile much while jogging because they are just trying to keep it together.

I always nod, like motorcyclists, and always get a nod back. A smile is probably a bit too much when you are concentrating. If someone smiled at me, they would receive a nod in return also.

Is it everyone, or just the men?
This is meant as a compliment, but if that picture is you, then perhaps the men are a little distracted and haven't even noticed you smiling.

I always smile back. To me, it would just be awkward not to smile. And who cares if they dont smile back. Theyre just being rude.
