Some have been firefighters, drumming up some job action.

Some burn down properties to collect fire insurance because they'd rather have the cash.

Some burn a property to destroy evidence of other crimes, such as murder of its occupants.

Some are terrorists who understand that if they create major fires, it is disruptive and requires major resources to combat.

Some are environmentalists who figure that burning down a home under construction, releasing all its toxins into the air, is somehow going to help the environment by stopping the home from being built.

Some enviros like to torch SUVs because they have been conditioned to hate 'symbols'. Then they hop back into their cars and burn terrorist gas getting home.

Of course, there are the occasional few who just like to see fire. Big, pretty, bright flames. Playing with matches just doesn't do it for them any more.

People who commit arson want attention. They are deprived of it and although it is bad attention it's still the same to them. Also they might want to cover up something or get ins. money if they can't afford or sell something ( car, house etc.).

I had a friend that took his old (all wood, no foam) couch out of the house and burned it in a big fire pit out back and got charged with arson.

Sociopaths destroy what fears or supports them.

Insurance money to pay off debt, vigilante and hate groups to make people move, bored firemen, and in some cases just pissing off the wrong person.

Some people just like fire.
