For that amount of money, I would go to companies, civic groups, etc. While you will still probably need multiple donors, you will need fewer than if you try to raise money from individuals. However, if you can get a local tv channel or radio station to talk about your fundraising efforts, that might also give you a big boost. If you go for publicity and larger sources of money, you'll get further. You can do this!

The post before mine included many of the things that I have used for trips to other countries with students. A couple more suggestions are:

ask businesses if they would be willing to make a donation

sell refreshments at school plays and musicals

do yard work or shovel snow

We also had a spaghetti dinner. It takes a lot of people to volunteer though.

How much time do you have?

Is this for one person or more than one?

Some ideas for fundraising:

1) Selling candy
2) Car washes
3) Garage Sales
4) Bake Sales
5) Selling on ebay
6) Raffle (for materials prizes)
7) 50/50 raffle
8) Selling magazines
9) Find "sponsors" who will help fund the trip in return for speaking engagements (slide shows, etc.)
10) Ask family members

All these ideas are good. Have a battle of the bands in a local area. You can pick the bands out yourself, or can just let your friends play if they are in a band, and make it a fundraising event. It does take a lot, but you can make a lot from it as well.
