I can tell you exactly what it is I own a '98 B4C Police package.
Mine did the same thing. It is the A/C compressor. Have the orifice tube changed. Should solve the problem, but it may need a new compressor.

It's very possibly the timing.If the timing is to far advansed.or retarded.Itcan sound like a rattle under the hood..

IF YOU ARE REFERRING TO ENGINE PINGING DUE TO THE CRUMMY GAS WE GET THESE DAYS TRY AN OCTANE BOOSTER
IF IT IS ACTUALLY A LOOSE PART RATTLE IT CAN BE FOUND SOMETIMES BY TAPPING A RUBBER HAMMER ON VARIOUS PARTS UNDER THE HOOD AND DONT FORGET THE WORST OFFENDER....THE HEAT SHIELDS ON THE CATALYTIC CONVERTOR AND MUFFLERS

Have to agree with dirty dog. Try premium gas and then check knock sensor which works with electronic timing.

Sounds like the knock sensor is bad. or someone has been putting regular gas in it.....Put some premium gas and see if that helps...
