I would recommend reading 'The Red Rose Box'. It is the story of two sisters from Louisiana whose parents were killed in a hurricane while the sisters were in New York. They go to live with their aunt and uncle in California, above the Mason-Dixon line, and for the first time, truly experience freedom. It is touching!
