eucalyptus oil will work

If it is a gum-type residue probably the safest thing would be to use goo-gone or paint thinner (mineral spirits). Acetone will also work, it's great for removing pine pitch, but acetone (as in nail polish remover) will damage some plastic.

Whatever it is, if you have the right solvent, you should not have to rub much. Let the solvent soften the sticky residue and you should be able to just wipe it off with a clean paper towel.

Rubbing alcohol is the cheapest solvent that I know works well. Vinegar may be cheaper, but be prepared for your phone absorbing some of it & smelling like vinegar for a long time. Many plastics will not stand up to nail polish remover.

Lighter fluid works well. Just be sure to use a damp cloth with water afterward to remove the trace amounts of light fluid. And I don't suggest holding your phone near an open flame. Alcohol swabs work well too.

There are any number of solvents that will do the trick, including Goo Gone. My personal choice is rubber cement solvent, or gasoline stove fuel. These are, of course, flammable, and proper precautions must be used.

Alcohol can help. Goo-gone can, too. Hardware and drug stores sell goo-gone. I'll melt the glue.

Try WD-40 it disolves gum so I don't know why it wouldn't work on an adhesive.
