My sulcata tortoise use to do that, just make sure that the place it flips isn't too close to a heat lamp or its basking area. After a couples times it flips over, it will learn not to do it anymore. (mine use to flip over a rock) I would leave him there for about an hour to 2 and he kept doing for about 3 more day and i kept him there and helped him after 2 hrs and then he knew to stop doing it. lol. Becareful because mine never stayed flipped past 3 hours. (usually it takes them a while but they will manage to get back up if they have a rock next to them)

Not automatically.

If a turtle flips, and cannot right itself (maybe it is soft sand with no leverage, or it is partially trapped), it will eventual dehydrate and die of exposure.

The old story is that the organs will get damaged somehow, killing the turtle. Oddly enough, this is based on a different aspect of turtles! The embryo in the EGG is very fragile and can be detached and killed by moving the egg too much or turning it over.

Yes. The bottom shell is not as protective to predators and heat. If it is unable to get itself flipped back over, it could die .

toroise's dont like being on there backs, it depends on how long they are on there back for, i have one an if he climbs and falls from stuff he quickly try's to get back on his feet, if he struggles i turn him over slowly, as long as they are not left on there backs for a very long time thay should be fine, most the time if they flip over they can get bsck on there feet by themselves so you should'nt worry

Yes it can die. It will suffocate because everything will put pressure on his lungs and it will put too much weight on his lungs therefore he will suffocate to death. Not a good thing!--Ashley
