Looking thru Diana P's list above I think Hitler is probably the most (in)famous name there. How sad that is that someone so terrible is the top of the list! And so far this century it's probably Bin Laden - - - - the beat goes on.

I don't really know if I could pick one person - so many people seem to be famous for a variety of reasons. I mean, everyone has heard of the Queen (and lots of other royals), the Dal'ai Lama, the Pope etc. But then you've got people who are famous for what they've done like your examples and a myriad of others - John Lennon, Mother Theresa and so on.

It's very hard to say for sure.
I think in terms of the effect the person had on the world as a whole, and the vast number of people his actions affected, the answer is Adolf Hitler.
Nobody said it had to be important/famous in a GOOD way.
