Is this a relationship question? If so, to look at the big picture you need to stop personalizing. If you can look at the situation from others points of view, then you will see the whole picture. The problem lies with not being able to look beyond yourself and how the issue effects you. Just remember that tomorrow will still come, and problems, no matter how big they seem, are really meaningless (proof: they won't change gas prices). They are only important to you. If you can disconnect yourself from them (as the rest of the world already is) then you will see the problem for what it really is and be able to solve it.

That is only something you can learn over time. Chess is a game where you have to think 4-5 moves ahead to be really successful. You need to know the ramifications of the move you are making for several moves in the future, not just the one you are going to make. Maybe playing that would help.
Personally, I learned to think outside the box by observing what other people do in situations.

do the what if sanarios and go from there I'm a person that likes to think out side of the box. be creative on your sanario questions and I think that will help you also ask others for there opinion and just see them as opinions not answers that might help as well.

Before you make a decision, ask yourself what you think the consequences will be and whether you can live with them. That is thinking of the bigger picture.
