Just bought a 2003 chev 3/4 ton hd! when starting to move from a stop it makes some whining noise. Is this common? I was told the HD trans makes this normally?

Hello and good question.

No the transmission should not make any noise. Best advise is to return it to where you bought it from or call them stating your concern. You might be looking at transmission repairs in the future which you can avoid all toghter. So , call them up see what possition they take on it , If you bought it from a private owner there is a law that u can return the vehicle within a certain amount of days.

Or you can take it to a transmission shop and let them test it out to better understand the noise.

*** Check your transmission fuild level, start vehicle and when WARM check it - levels when COLD can differ from WARM . ***

Good Luck

Yes that is normal to an extent.... a slight whine noise does come from the 4L80-E trans and the 4L85-E trans. while in first gear due to design. it has a sungear in the first gear of those trannys that emits a whine untill it shifts to the next gear. Iam a certified GM tech and the noise you describe is nothing unusual, but if the noise seems excessive to you it may be a good idea to run it by the dealer just so it can be heard and compared to what they should be like. or if you know of another one you could possibly test drive yourself and make the comparison... just be sure it is the same trans. They are designed with the sungear setup so they will hold up to the added load that is put on them in the 3/4 and up trucks with pulling trailers and such. Hope this helps

Is it infact low on fluid or is the fluid grimy? Is the knocking noise the transmission moving difficult? you're low on fluid or choose a fluid/filter out replace. Oil and lube places do this for approximately 70-eighty dollars. If the concern maintains you have got an electric powered concern or some thing with the bands or gears. As for fluid i could say you would be secure with DEXRON® III/MERCON® (that's form maximum areas shops/low value shops sell- till youchronic a Chrysler) yet whilst uncertain i'm useful a sales individual could be happy that might assist you.

That's probably got a 700 R4 transmission in it. Never trust it. You can put in a 4L80 which is basically a th400 with a tailshaft OD. That's the best transmission to have. Good luck.
