It is okay, but be aware that photo printers aren't meant to last as long as a regular printer. They are designed to print a couple of pictures every once in a while, but regular printers are designed to print a lot of pages all the time, so they will last a much longer time.
And, just because you aren't printing pictures doesnt mean it will act any different, so to it, it's the same as printing pictures so it wears out just as fast

Yes, just be sure you're not buying one of the portable 4x6 photo printers.
Otherwise, basically, every printer you buy will do photos as an added feature. Since do-it-yourself photo printing has become so popular, companies such as HP, Canon, and Epson have machines that do fantastic photos aside from just normal document printing. My favorite one out right now is the HP C5180.

No it's not. Why? Because it's expensive to maintain just to run it as a regular printer and it's optimized to printing photographs that means special photo paper needs to be used. Printing on a regular paper wont give expected results. However If you meant on A4 InkJet photo printer that ones can be used as they are regular printers with enhanced technology for printing photos. I am not sure about which one you were referring...
This is printer for printing photographs only: http://www.usa.canon.com/app/images/printer/ds810_586x225.jpg
This is Ink Jet printer like any other that has enhanced technology for printing photographs: http://www.usa.canon.com/app/images/printer/ip4000_586x225.jpg

Yes. Photo printers are normal printers that also print in photo quality, but they can be used normally as well. Check the users manual.
