i think the Bruins biggest rival is the Montreal Canadiens, part of the original 6 teams. Montreal Canadiens first Canadian team started back in 1909 and the Boston Bruins first American team to be in the original 6 teams. for this year i don't think they have a number one goalie and that will hurt them but they did pick up 2 good players in Zdeno Chara from Ottawa and Marc Savard from Atlanta. this rivalry started since the 1924-25 season in the NHL the oldest rivalry by far, and they have faced each other more times then any other teams in the NHL. teams founded Montreal Canadiens 1909, Boston Bruins 1924, Detroit Red Wings 1925, Chicago Black hawks 1925, New York Rangers 1926 and the Toronto Maple Leafs 1927. i wrote Chicago Blackhawks the old way Black Hawks.

They're in a "rebuilding" stage at the moment. Last season they finished last in their division and 26th overall in the NHL (out of 30) They've missed the playoffs 3 of the last 6 seasons and traded away two of their top players (Joe Thornton to the San Jose Sharks for Marco Sturm, Brad Stuart, and Wayne Primeau and Sergei Samsonov to the Edmonton Oilers for Marty Reasoner, Yan Stastny, and a draft pick).
A few rookies who have been impressing at camp, and may or may not make the starting roster for the regular season are the 3 K's: Karsums, Krejci, and Kalus (all forwards).
Just about the entire management staff was replaced (i.e. Head Coach, Asst. Coach, GM, ...). This summer they made some big acquisitions in defenseman Zdeno Chara, center Marc Savard, and 5th overall pick Phil Kessel in this years draft. This season a lot of fans are expecting them to at least make the playoffs, considering all the work done with the team over the summer.
Some sophomore and third year seasons to watch for: Patrice Bergeron (C), Brad Boyes (C/RW), Milan Jurcnia (D), and Andrew Alberts (D).
They've also acquired some veterans in Shean Donovan (Calgary Flames) and Mark Mowers (Detroit Red Wings) for forwards, who are expected to play 3rd or 4th line and PK. Also Wade Brookbank (Vancouver Canucks) and Nathan Dempsey (LA Kings) who are expected to play 5-6-7th defensemen.
For goaltending, the #1 spot is expected to go to Hannu Toivonen , who was having a great rookie season until he injured his ankle and forced him to miss most of the season after taking the #1 spot from Andrew Raycroft (who was traded to Toronto this summer for Finnish goaltending prospect Tuuka Rask). Also fighting for the #1 spot is Tim Thomas who had an unexpected break out year after playing the majority of his hockey career in the AHL and overseas in Europe. The Bruins also signed prospect Brain Finley, who will most likely stay in Providence (the Bruins AHL team) this year.
Their biggest rival is the Montreal Canadiens.

Boston IS going to be good this year. They have made a couple of good pick-ups including getting Zdeno Chara from Ottawa. If he stays healthy, the Bruins will be a much improved team.
Biggest Boston rival is Montreal.

They have been dedcent as of late. Their last championship was in 1972 but they had been to the 2nd round of the playoffs the 3 season previous to last. Last year, they did not play well at all and did not make the playoffs. They are a storied franchise though as they were the first American hockey team back in 1924. Brief, but I hope this helps. I just recommend checking http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Bruins. All the info you could want there.

their greatest rivals are the buffalo sabres, at least when i was in new york, thats what i've heard..it may be the canadiens now, because the sabres aren't so hot anymore

The Bruins are a poor team. They were in a period of rebuilding which was made worse by very poor management decisions.
