Partly because the cost is so high that most insurance companies refuse to cover the cost unless it's for life-threatening medical reasons. Some insurance companies actually go so far as to put an age stipulation on their coverage og the procedure.

But also partly bacause being that young, you aren't in a position to make such a decision. If you get your tubes tied at 21 years of age, what happens when you turn 30 and settle down with the person of your dreams, and decide you want to have (notice i did not say adopt) children of your own? then what? Well, in your youth, you decided that you could clearly predict the future, and made a life-altering decision, that has now come back to bite you in the @ss.

(The process was thought to be irreversable, Fortunately, we know that it's not. It can be undone, but there's the scar tissue issue, among others...)

An abortion is a different issue. Women get abortions for different reasons. Some got pregnant unintentionally, some got pregnant for the wrong reasons, some were impregnated involuntarily (read: RAPED), and some have to terminate the pregnancy because there is something wrong with the fetus, or because carrying that fetus to term will compromise the mother's health dangerously. There is no age limit on abortion, just a time limit to have it done legally and safely. Check your state health department regulations for more information.

Incidentally, not to start an argument with anyone else answering this question, but medically (and that is how we're looking at this issue), abortion is not murder. It is considered murder if the child can sustain it's own life (heart, lungs, and brain activity) under it's own power, OUTSIDE of the mother's body. When you go in for an abortion, it is to terminate a pregnancy that has not advanced yet.

I dont think that is right, I am 23 and I have one child pregnant with another one and I am getting my tubes tied right after I have my baby.
I live in Pa and my sister in law had hers done when she was 18. And she wasn't married, neither am i.
Are you going to a doctor or a clinic, check with clinics.. planned parenthood is a good one, they will find you someone that will do it.
They have something called Insure (?) which is something they pinich your tubes shut with and it stays on as long as you want. It can also be removed at any time. I know you dont have to be 21 for that, my sister got it done when she was 18.. Also consider an iud... I had one for a while.

Mostly because at your age you are still not sure of what you want out of life. many people have thought they never wanted any kids until much later in their lives and they change their minds. Reversing a tubal is difficult and expensive and does not guarentee conception will take place. I am now 38 and I am very different than I was at 21. You can't see it now because of your age....but you will some day.

it's simply because the doctor doesn't want to do anything so drastic at a young age, when your body is still growing. Another thing, is that you may want more children in 10 years . . .it's easier to take birth control, but if you and your bf really don't want children, it's easier for him to go get a vasectomy, out patient clinics can do it for about 350.00 and he will recover more easily than you getting your tubes tied.

Same reason it's not recommended to have laser eye surgery until you're 21 . . .body not done growing.

They feel that you are not at a good stage in your life to make that kind of decision. I was 22 and had my third child (i used birth control for all three) and they still argued with me to do mine.It was three kids or 26 when i had mine done. I was still made to wait for a while before they finally consented. Some doctors can use an extenuaiting(?) cercumstace clause or something like that to perform a tubal but you really have to show just cause for them to do it.

because at 21 you are very young & will change several times before you are out of your child bearing years. You may decided later in life to have a family- I suspect there may be a medical side to that law, but I am not a Dr. so I can't comment on that.

In Missouri you can IF you can find a doctor willing to do it. My OB wouldn't do it unless you were 25 or had at least two kids, other than in cases of it being a medical problem. I think it is more doctors setting it than the actual law, check around at some other clinics to be sure.

Because having an abortion won't (usually) prevent you from having kids in the future. It's very difficult to reverse a tubal ligation and highly likely you'll change your mind when you get older and regret your decision.

Good question, I think that women should be allowed to have their tubes tied at 18, that way there would be less abortions

I guess they figure you don't really know what you want until you are older and they don't want you to get your tubes tied then grow up and decide you want to have a baby. Even though it can be reversed it can cause problems later if you decide to have children.
