If you already have a new computer with XP on it, then I would use the disk and license key from that one to upgrade the ME machine.

If you have to go out and buy and upgrade disk, then forget it. It is still about $100 for the XP disk, and you can get a new machine that is much faster than the old ME machine for $299 - or even cheaper if you want to buy a used one on eBay.

However, should you decide that upgrading the ME machine is the way you want to go, then make sure that:

1) You are running a Pentium III processor. I know the specs for XP say all you need is 233mhz or faster, but believe me, you don;t want to run at that speed.

2) Make sure you have at least 256MB of RAM - again, the specs say you can run less, but if you have a slower processor (anything less than PIII 550mhz) you will really need the extra ram.

3) You will need a hard drive of at least 6GB. Windows itself takes up about 3BG - that's after the initial install, the upgrade to SP2 and all the rest of the updates. Add to that anything you are keeping and you will fill up that 6GB really fast.

If you need to purchase any of the three above, I would really recommend you think about a new comp.

Considering XP shipped in early 2002, your machine is at best 4 1/2 years old, if not older. If you are one of the lucky ones running a PIII 600mhz or faster CPU, my guess is that you are only running 64mb of ram - maybe 128mb.

Hope this helps you make a decision that's right for you!

The upgrade is possible
Windows ME can be upgraded to XP with a valid upgrade disk and key for about $100.
It will work fine on about any Pentium 3 and faster.
The system requirements state 128 MB ram. It will run on this much ram, but not very well. You really need 256 MB minimum and will work well with 512 MB. The more ram you can install the better.
I recently upgraded a 5 year old Dell and ran across a minor problem. The PC had 128 MB ram. It was terribly slow. When I went to upgrade the ram, I found it had RAM-BUS ram. This ram was only used for a short time. It is very pricey to install and must be installed in pairs.. Dell wanted over $450 to upgrade to 512 MB. Fortunately, I was able to find 512 MB ram at Tiger Direct for a little over $200.
So this upgrade cost the owner a little over $300. For a couple hundred more, he could have bought a new Dell.
So if you have enough RAM, or can get additional ram at a reasonable price, it's worth it. Otherwise, put the money you would spend on the upgrade and put it towards a new PC.

You'll be needing tons more ram if you're coming from ME. I upgraded and oo... it was fast with ME but could barely handle booting with XP.
Also in about 6 months Windows Vista (newest OS) should come out... Even thought i wouldnt' count on it because of all the recent delays it's a possitibility. Why waist your time and if you're going to get XP legaly and money on XP when Vista is going to come out.
Also the machine your using will not be able to handle either. Time to get a new one bub.
