First of all, GREAT choice for a pet! Here are my tips:
1) Give it vitamin C tablets EVERY day.
2) Get a big cage (not just the little starter cages from the pet store - check out http://www.cavycages.com )
3) Give it lots of fresh vegetables and fruit
4) Get it treats and wood to chew on
5) Get animal nail clippers and clip the nails once/month
6) Make sure it always has Timothy Hay (NOT alfalfa hay) and pellet food in the cage at all times.
7) Change it's water daily or bidaily.
8) Clean out the cage often, DON'T use cedar shavings.
9) Don't get it a running wheel or running ball.
10) Give it a house (you can get pigloos in pet stores).
Last, but not least, before you buy a piggy from the pet store, try out your local animal shelter or http://www.petfinder.com

Yeah. Don't get one. Seriously, there's not many animals I DONT like, seeing as how my family has 12 lol. But from experience I know that guinea pigs don't make very good pets. They're smelly, noisy, and require a lot of space and attention. Better choice are hamsters, rats, even mice. Just not guinea pigs! They usually aren't even after all that friendly.

guinea pigs are soooo cute! i love when the squeek!
my tip: only get one, get a baby one, large cage, leave a wooden box or an shoebox or some place for them to hide in the cage. there is also this big, round plastic thing that you can buy that lays on the floor. you can put an old sheet down, put the plastic thing around the sheet and the little pig can run around and get some exercise! i found it on ferrets.com i think? they love to chew so make sure you give them lots of wood to chew on, its also good for their teeth. don't give them too many of those sweet treats that you see in the pet stores because they are full of sugar and can cause diarrhea. carrots and lettuce and little apple slices are good treats for them but don't overfeed them. good luck!

Be careful because they carry lice and that definitely isn't a fun experience! Otherwise they are very cute and fun as long as you take care of them. Need some guidelines? We just searched the web for how to care for them and asked our vet and asked the pet store.

Socialize the hell out of it. Do not breed it. Make sure they have a large cage... they need room to run.

They are awesome!! They need lots of attention..Keep them clean..romaine lettuce only, not the other types of lettuce....just love it alot!! good luck.
